Fluxing. Place your earring backside up on the soldering board.

Place a small spot of flux where you want the ear post to go (Figure 1). Remember that (theoretically), solder will only be able to flow where you’ve placed flux, and this small spot of flux should keep the solder mostly in that one small area as it flows. (I say “theoretically” because in practice, the solder will often flow out past the perimeter of the spot of flux you’ve so carefully laid out. Another chemical agent called antiflux will very reliably prohibit the solder from flowing onto any area you’ve treated with it, so you may paint a circle around the spot of flux to keep the solder in a tight space. Not neccessary, but I thought it may be good for you to know that such a thing exists!)
